Another hit for Roeder November 6, 2007 Bryan Nofal (St. Augustine, FL USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mark Roeder continues to write wonderful books with themes that any gay man or woman can appreciate. These books really make you think that you live in the city of Verona, and can identify readily with many of the characters... Mark's gay youth chronicles series are a wonderful series to read for people of any age... Keep it up Mark!
Move Over Harry Potter here comes Marshall and The Gay Boys of Verona... September 4, 2007 R. Rigdon (Jacksonville, Florida USA) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I have read all of Mark Roeder's novels and everyone of them is a facinating read. DEAD HET BOYS is no exception. The edge of your seat suspense made me read straight through the night. Marshall and the gay boys of verona are in danger from forces real and forces from the supernatural world. Who will survive? And who is murdering the het boys?
I love all of Mr Roeders novels. The GAY YOUTH CHRONICLES as they are billed. It is great to read a story about the courage and strenghts of young gay men and their friends. It is great also to read about love that survives the tests of time, which for the most part is the theme to Mark Roeders novels.
While it is best to read them in chronological order, I suggest you pick just one and you'll be reading the rest in no time at all.
An exciting thriller and crime drama for GLBT youth September 4, 2007 Don Gorton (Boston, MA USA) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
Mark Roeder is one of the most prolific and popular authors writing for the GLBT youth and young adult reader. His Gay Youth Chronicles bring to life the struggles of gay and lesbian youth as they come to terms with their identities, families, friends, and antagonists in small-town America. His characters offer inspiration and affirmation to GLBT teens who are trying to understand who they are and how they fit in, supplying role models who have trailblazed paths to successful living and loving.
While most of Mark's books are romantic adventures, he is also a very skillful writer of thriller and crime drama novels. Dead Het Boys continues the tradition of two of his earlier novels of this type, Someone Is Killing the Gay Boys of Verona and Masked Destiny. A small community of gay teens and adults living in fictional Verona, Indiana in the late 90's draw together for support and protection when a violent gang of homophobes returns to town to continue a string of anti-gay assaults and murders. One gay teen, a super athlete with a flair for fighting off the homophobes, emerges as a hero: he almost singlehandedly keeps the bad guys on defense. But the drama ratchets up a notch as rumours abound of a mysterious anti-gay adult who has come to Verona, reportedly to wrack his own vengeance on gay people. Meanwhile, ghosts of boys who disappeared in nineteenth century Verona begin turning up, with ominous signs and portents. Evil is as much a player in this tale as the flesh and blood characters, and, as in real American life, is perpetuated by many who style themselves as paragons of "righteousness."
The suspense will keep the reader on edge, but will not prepare one for the surprise ending to the crime drama. The struggle between good and evil, love and hate, order and chaos climax in an intriguing and thought-provoking resolution which will force readers to examine their own moral compasses.
I highly recommend this novel, as a fitting continuation of the Gay Youth Chronicles which speak to the challenging experiences of GLBTQ youth growing up in the American Heartland. In keeping with Mark's philosophy of GLBT self-affirmation, he almost invariably brings about happy endings, although you're left to wonder how he manages to pull it off when you're in the midst of one of the many plot twists and turns.
SKYE'S THE LIMIT IN THIS SPOOKY PAGE TURNER September 2, 2007 Jak Klinikowski (El Paso, TX United States) 44 out of 46 found this review helpful
I've read almost all of the books in Roeder's GAY YOUTH CHRONICLES, and this novel is one of the best. Roeder has several different threads in the series. One of his books begins in the 50's, while others are set in the 80's the 90's and the early 21st century. Many recurring characters appear at different ages along the way, and several of the novels have supernatural themes. DEAD HET BOYS is one of these.
Roeder's books are mostly set in or near the small town of Verona Indiana and this one is no exception. The year is 1998 and Verona's small population of gay boys is just starting to get over a string of gay bashing murders that occurred in previous novels. With a little ghostly assistance, the murders were exposed and either arrested, killed or driven from the community.
But just as Sean, Nick Skye, and their straight friend Marshall, the stories primary characters, are beginning to breathe easy, four of the evil homophobes return to Verona, comfortable in the knowledge that no charges against them can be proven. The tables, however, have turned, and now these vicious straight hoodlums are turning up dead, and a new mystery is ignited. The novel also includes a secondary story about trapped souls that serves to strengthen the stories supernatural credibility.
Roeder's strength lies in his strong character studies. Each chapter is in the voice of one of the main characters, and helps to evoke a real sense of who these boys are. Particularly effective is the development of the character, Skye. This is the second novel in which he's starred and it's clear that Roeder intends him to be something of a gay super hero, destined to protect his gay brothers and sisters. Skye is a gorgeous self-described alpha male football jock with an over inflated ego and a constantly horny nature, but he is unbelievably kind hearted, with an unexpected wit and charm that make him all but impossible not to love. As I said when I reviewed Roeder's MASKED DESTINY, I think Skye is quite possibly Roeder's finest creation.
DEAD HET BOYS is admittedly a bit on the far-fetched side, but this is good old fashioned story telling at its best, and what well spun yarn doesn't go a little over the top from time to time? I highly recommend Mark Roeder's GAY YOUTH CHRONICLES, and while I might not suggest you start with this particular book, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you do.
