Cute shounen-ai work August 14, 2008 J. Gebhard (CA USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Oh My God! Is a part of the newest yaoi/shounen-ai line from Deux.
To begin, the book itself is not very thick (about 174 pages). Seeing that it is apart of a longer series (at least 2+ vols), it would have been nice to get more substance for my retail price of $12.95 (+tax). The pages are an odd shade of white-yellow, but still acceptable. The inking is very well done.
The plot can only be described as shounen-ai. (Why this work has an "Older Teen" rating is beyond me.) As the summary shows, Yuto's family was once powerful sorcerers, but now the family's power is fake. Then, one day Yuto accidentally releases a supposed god of destruction. The only problem is that the "God" doesn't remember anything about himself. Yuto names him Jade. Jade does have god-like powers such as being able to fly.
This said, the buddy-buddy friendship between the two is played out to hint at a deep and possible yaoi relationship. But this is where it ends - at hinting. For a yaoi fan, this work will do nothing more that tease you and leaving wondering when the work earns its rating. For everyone else, it is a cute shounen-ai work with lots of funny moments and good fast-paced story lines. Jade's rash and destructive moments earn quite a few laughs as well as his adaptation to modern living. Yuto's role is less entertaining. He plays the more down-to-earth, instructor role with some occasional moments that are very sweet.
Most of the works full storylines center on spirits that wander into Yuto's life. With Jade's help (and hints at Yuto's own power) the conflicts are easily resolved with brief brushes of tension.
Overall, Oh My God! is a quick but enjoyable read. Do not expect anything explicit or even some cute boy-on-boy kissing scenes. This work does nothing more than hint at a boy-on-boy relationship. Still, the work has plenty of humor, a good fast-paced storyline and is accompanied with beautiful art.
Not yaoi as of yet.. August 8, 2008 robbie (MD) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The story starts off with Yuto releasing a god from a sword that he had been bound into. The god doesn't remember anything about himself not even his name so Yuto names him Jade. The story progresses with Jade working at the house of Yuto's grandfather where Yuto lives with his mother and father. The story hasn't progressed to any kind of romantic nature much less yaoi at the end, only a few blushes. There is a Volume 2 so maybe it will progress to that in that volume. Over all I liked the story itself but if your looking for anything of a graphic nature you might want to hold off.
