Volume 1 was better... April 29, 2008 Jem (MD, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed Your Honest Deceit v01: (Yaoi) (Your Honest Deceit). The story was more mature, both in characters and in setting. The boys in school yaoi has gotten old for me, and this came as a breath of fresh air. Kitahara is in his early forties and a lawyer, and twenty-nine year old Kuze has had a crush on him for years. When Kuze comes to work for Kitahara and realizes he's no longer married, he goes after what he wants. After such a set-up, I expected volume 2 to keep the freshness going. However, I was a bit disappointed.
The story takes the cliche path of a rival trying to break up the couple. Kitihara's old school mate wants him, but Kuze will protect his "sensei." That right there was my first problem. Kuze continues to call Kitahara "sensei" (which means "master," if I am not mistaken) and Kitahara refers to him as Kuze-kun (a formal address for younger characters). These two are lovers yet they remain so formal, even in the midst of making out? And Kuze is 29 with a career, surely he would have earned the "san" by now? Also, the angst from the rivalry seemed forced. The school chum's advances were obviously unwelcome to both Kitahara and Kuze, so the drama seemed misplaced. Kuze came across as a whining uke, instead of a determined lover. I would have preferred a story where their jobs caused the conflict rather than this same old tale. The side story of that same school mate and his besotted nephew (who also a "call boy") actually creeped me out a little - incest is just not erotic to me despite the age of the characters.
That said, this does have some very good points. The artwork was as high quality as volume 1. The characters are beautifully rendered, and the panels and dialog clear. The sex, though not as steamy as in volume 1, helped keep the story interesting. Overall, this is definitely better than other yaoi, but as a sequel it fell short.
A delightful and engaging sequel. October 14, 2007 R.Parklane (Tokyo, Japan) The sequel of this 2 volumes story have one fierce and possessive Kuze-kun trying to protect his sensei from the sexual advances of the forceful prosecutor, Tsutsumi who is also Kitahara's college classmate. Their story is delighful, engaging and humorous, with meaningful moments as the mangaka expresses this couple's growing love so well.
Kuze is such an endearing character as he assumes the role of a knight in shining armour riding to his sensei's help. And you just wish to give the clueless Kitahara a good shake but never doubt his love for Kuze-kun. Tsutsumi is your typical dominating seme, though he admits he is a "switch hitter" and his side story with his 17 year old nephew who is besotted with him is pretty good. Kurosawa finding company with one abandoned cat is sweet with its hilarious moments as he tries to analyse the relationship between Kuze-kun and Sensei, which is no secret in the office.
There is also an unrelated story on 2 brothers. This may be short but pretty enjoyable as the younger possessive brother wishes to keep his "Niichan" for himself but realizes it is not that easy when Niichan falls for his senior.
This mangaka has an engaging and light toned style and her artwork is lovely. I love the chibi versions of Kuze-kun and his sensei during those sweet and cute moments. Although the 3 other stories are enjoyable I would have preferred the mangaka to have given us more on Kuze-kun and his sensei.
