Life Cycles

by Steve Rider

I remember
Long before
I ever had birthdays
Much more simple

Once I was content
Just to be
A single molecule
Of water vapor

Falling silently, ever so slow
Floating through white clouds
I see they are just like fog
Only up higher in the sky

Cloud becomes heavy
Cooler air now
Drifting down as one droplet
In an all day rain

Now on the ground
Looking up
Under a tree
Soak into the ground

Tree roots
Bright sun
Heat
Capillary action
Rushed up
Inside a living being!

Life cycle
Green
Sunshine
Crisp fall air

Leaves falling down
Side to side motions
Like a conductors baton
Each to the end of a song

Two years go by
While a fallen leaf
Great wind comes along
Swirling up
In the air once more

To a stream
Bubbling brook
Past the field with the tree
From which I once fell

Now to a river
Then back to the sea
Saturated
Sinking
Dissolved

Waiting
Another cycle
Someday
